Gender and sexually diverse couples very welcome.
I would see the main difference between counselling and psychotherapy as relating to the time-scale of the therapy and the level of emotional and psychic depth being worked with. Counselling is often regarded as more short-term work, focussed on the present and often targeting quite specific issues in a goal-oriented way. Psychotherapy, on the other hand tends to be a longer-term endeavour which explores the client’s past life experiences and involves working at greater relational depth on more complex and deep-rooted issues. The needs and wishes of the client would dictate the kind of therapy offered.
